Sewing and Alteration Volunteers needed this Christmas

Friday 23 December – Friday 30 December 2011.

The folks at Crisis have asked for our help spreading the word about their work, Crisis at Christmas.

Up to nine temporary centres are set up across London for homeless people. Each centre provides vital companionship, support and hot meals as well as health checks, housing advice, training and further education opportunities.

As well as this, each centre offers a sewing service which means that each guest can get their often precious clothes repaired. Whilst some are simple alterations, others are more advanced and Crisis are urgently looking for volunteers who have basic sewing skills (like sewing on buttons and taking up hems) to advanced, with experience of making garments from scratch.

If you’re interested in making a difference to people’s lives this Christmas, please consider signing up.

Shifts run from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm, starting on Friday 23 December through to the evening of Thursday 29 December. Each volunteer is asked to do a minimum of two shifts.

More details can be found on the Crisis website http://www.crisis.org.uk or alternatively people can call 0300 636 1000.

Karen currently volunteers as the Sewing Service Organiser at Crisis at Christmas.

“…fortunately, within the group of sewing volunteers, there are always people there with a lot of skill and ability to assist those who are less experienced, so the finished product meets, and often exceeds, the guest’s expectations. I think we make a difference. And that, in the end, is what has brought me back, year after year.”
